20 foods that can be eaten after the expiration date
Many people throw away fully good food just because the printed expiration date has already passed.
However, these dates are often about quality rather than safety.
In fact, the USDA states that, with the exception of infant formula, expiration dates are not required and do not necessarily mean that the food is bad.
Here are 20 foods you can safely eat after their expiration date, as long as they look, smell, and taste good.
- Courage
Chilled eggs can stay good for 3–5 weeks after the use-by date has passed. Do a “swim test” — if they sink into the water, they’re still fresh.
Milk

Milk can be safe even a week after its expiration date if it is stored at a low temperature. Spoiled milk has a sour smell and a thick consistency.
- Yogurt
Unopened yogurt is durable 1 to 3 weeks after the expiration date. Slight separation of the liquid is normal, just stir.
- Hard cheese
Hard cheeses like cheddar or Parmesan cheese can last for weeks after the expiration date. Mold on the surface can be cut off.
- Butter
If refrigerated, butter can last 1 to 2 months beyond its expiration date. Store them in the freezer to extend its shelf life.
