A baggage handler reveals why you should never tie a strap to your suitcase

When we travel, we all share the same fear: that our suitcase will disappear, that it will get caught in the journey, or worse, that it will be mistaken for another passenger’s. To avoid this scenario, many people attach a colorful ribbon, a scarf or a small, easily identifiable accessory to their luggage. At first glance, it seems clever… but according to John, who has worked as a baggage handler at Dublin Airport for many years, this widespread practice is actually a bad idea disguised as a good one.

And his explanations may well make you change your habits for your next trip.

Why is the band actually a problem?

For John, the answer is simple: the belts can interfere with the automatic system that scans luggage before it is loaded into the hold. These machines, which are very fast and particularly sensitive, must read the barcodes without hindrance.

When a ribbon, a bulky key ring, or even an old sticker is placed in front of the scanning area, the machine stops. As a result, the suitcase must be checked manually, which slows down the process… and may even result in the bag not being allowed on board.

A simple decorative accessory can therefore turn a simple trip into a less terrifying experience at the airport.
