Wrapped in their stems, bananas stay fresh for up to 10 days longer (Image: Katherine McPhillips).
I’ve also found an even more effective way to extend their shelf life: I recently discovered that bananas release ethylene through their stems. So wrapping the stems in aluminum foil or plastic wrap keeps them fresh for weeks.
Bananas tend to go bad quickly if stored in a fruit bowl (Image: Katherine McPhillips).
Aluminum foil or plastic wrap creates an airtight seal around the stems, trapping ethylene gas and preventing it from leaking into the air.
Don’t make the same mistake I did by using parchment paper: I learned that it doesn’t work because it doesn’t allow you to form a tight seal that keeps out the ethylene gas.
You can also store bananas in the refrigerator to keep them fresh (Image: Katherine McPhillips).
About two weeks ago, I tried this method on a bunch of freshly purchased bananas, and after 10 days, they were still fresh. Wrapped in a simple piece of aluminum foil, they lasted almost two weeks longer than in a fruit bowl.
