Can You Solve This Math Test That’s Driving the Internet Crazy?

The Most Common Wrong Answer

Many people read the equation like this:

8 ÷ [2(4)]

Which turns into:

8 ÷ 8 = 1

That answer spreads fast online — and it feels right.

But here’s the problem…

That’s not how the order of operations works.

The Rule Most People Forget

In school, you probably learned this as PEMDAS:

  • Parentheses

  • Exponents

  • Multiplication

  • Division

  • Addition

  • Subtraction

But here’s the critical detail many people were never taught clearly:

👉 Multiplication and division are solved left to right — not one before the other.

They have equal priority.

Solving It the Correct Way

Let’s apply the rule properly.

We already handled the parentheses:

8 ÷ 2 × 4

Now we move left to right:

  1. 8 ÷ 2 = 4

  2. 4 × 4 = 16

The correct answer is: 16
