Many people read the equation like this:
8 ÷ [2(4)]
Which turns into:
8 ÷ 8 = 1
That answer spreads fast online — and it feels right.
But here’s the problem…
That’s not how the order of operations works.
The Rule Most People Forget
In school, you probably learned this as PEMDAS:
Parentheses
Exponents
Multiplication
Division
Addition
Subtraction
But here’s the critical detail many people were never taught clearly:
👉 Multiplication and division are solved left to right — not one before the other.
They have equal priority.
Solving It the Correct Way
Let’s apply the rule properly.
We already handled the parentheses:
8 ÷ 2 × 4
Now we move left to right:
8 ÷ 2 = 4
4 × 4 = 16
✅ The correct answer is: 16
