The main causes of tonsil stones are materials and debris trapped in tonsil crypts found in the – yes, you guessed it – tonsils, those oval-shaped, infection-fighting flaps of tissue located in the back of the throat. These can be minerals such as calcium, food or deposits, but also bacteria and fungi.
Symptoms, frequency and solutions of tonsil stones
Tonsil stones are more common than you might think, although they don’t always cause symptoms. If this is the case, these symptoms may include bad breath, coughing, ear infections, and sore throats.

According to some sources, 3 million Americans suffer from tonsil stones every year, but fortunately, it is quite easy to remove them. In fact, various household methods, such as gargling with salt water and using a delicate object such as a cotton swab, can be used to remove them.
In addition, a strong cough can actually loosen the stones and make them stand up again.
In the video below (which has been viewed many times), a person can be seen removing an tonsil stone. Warning! It’s pretty graphic!
