Is your cat biting you? Here’s what it means.

A cat that feels threatened becomes defensive. This can happen when it’s startled by a sudden movement, when it’s protecting an object it considers its territory (a toy, the corner of the couch, even you!), or when it feels its personal space is being invaded.

Just like a horse that kicks when it’s scared, a cat bites out of survival instinct. This doesn’t mean it doesn’t love you, it just feels vulnerable.

Pain or discomfort: a silent warning sign.
If your normally affectionate cat starts biting for no apparent reason, it could be a warning sign. Joint pain, dental problems, or mild digestive issues: our cats are good at hiding pain. Biting becomes a way of saying, “I feel pain.”

A good reflex: If this behavior is new and inexplicable, consult your veterinarian.
