My stepmother smashed my late mother’s precious crystal set to pieces – she had no idea she had been tricked.

“Accidents happen,” he continued. “I guess some things aren’t meant to last forever.”

I turned and ran. My shoes crunched on the fragments. Every step broke my heart a little more. I couldn’t let her see me cry. I didn’t want to give her that victory.

That evening, I called Aunt Marlene in tears. She was my mother’s sister. She was the only person who could truly understand what I had lost.

“Sandra broke Mom’s crystal glasses,” I yelled into the phone.

Silence fell between us. Then Aunt Marlene’s voice returned, different.

“Jennifer, dear, I have something important to tell you.”

 ” What ? ”
