Refrigerators have adjustable temperature settings, usually from 1 to 5 or 1 to 6, depending on the model. During the hot summer months, the temperature is often set at or near the highest level. However, in the winter, users can reduce the cooling level, which reduces energy consumption without affecting the shelf life of food. Setting the temperature to 2 or 3, or even 1 in the winter, is perfectly reasonable.
